Fall is here for sure.

As of last weekend, we had had only a few light frosts. Most of the leaves were gone from the trees, but a few hung on. I also found a solitary wildflower on a walk with DL and Starbuckeroo. I don't normally pick flowers, but I felt compelled to take this one and bring it home:

It's now in a tiny vase. :)

When you pet Booger, she smiles:

RRRRRRRRRRRROOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO!!!

On Sun and Mon nights, we got a real, hard frost. The dogs are insanely happy! (despite the roo-full appearance of Starbuckeroo)

Happy Equinox!

Autumn sez, "Happy Autumn! I ate my breakfast and took my morning walk, and I'm going to spend the rest of my day napping."

It is still raining (three out of four days since May), and it's unseasonably warm.

Refugee farmers wheel giant cabbage to market in Anchorage

A cabbage parade! It's like the Olympic torch, except instead of a torch, it's a cabbage. And instead of prominent people of world fame, it's a local refugee family who grew their first giant cabbages in Anchorage. :)

I for one am delighted to have the phrase "cabbage parade" in my vocabulary. :)

Food report

I finally tried the crazy long-grain wild rice I got from Robertson Trading on my trip to Northern Saskatchewan:

You will observe that it takes an hour to cook. I don't usually take an hour to make dinner; that's why despite my curiosity, I had not gotten around to trying it yet.

When they say "long grain", they do not mess around:

As it cooked, the water turned brown, and disappeared quickly. I used a whopping 4:1 volume ratio of water to rice:

When it was done, the grains cracked open. It was delicious!

In other food photos, a strawberry-rhubarb pie I made a week or so ago:

And here is my current cheese collection:

Life is good!

Starbuck sez, "I like cheese. Do I get cheese?"

The cusp of fall on Murphy Dome

Our afternoon hike on Murphy Dome completed our day of enjoying the sunshine!

And Starbuckeroo takes off down the trail!

Mud. Ugh. This is where we turned back:

A gentle glide into fall

Last Saturday, the weather seemed mild. Dry-ish after months of rain. Then all of a sudden, a sudden rainstorm kicked up, with giant raindrops seeming to fall out of the sunshine!

Then the rain thickened up, the sun disappeared, and the rain and wind looked violent!

It poured over the next hour, then disappeared as quickly as it had come. Late that night, when I stepped outside, I saw that dark skies had come at last, and millions of stars appeared to have been spilled across them. Millions and millions, and the Milky Way!

The next day was so brilliant blue, clear, crisp, and mosquito-free, that we scrapped plans to cut weeds (and by that I mean, the plans for DL to cut weeds while I supervised from the porch) and went for an afternoon hike instead. By the end of the day, each fuzzy thing had had a tailored walk schedule!
2 miles for Autumn
6 miles for Linden
10 miles for DL
12 miles for Starbuck

Our first walk was a 2-miler for Autumn. That's as far as she can go nowadays. For our second walk, we left her behind and headed to our neighborhood trail:

There was lots of standing water, per usual for this summer:

Booger!

Starbuckeroo!

So much water.

DL and Roo walkin' through the woods:

Then Booger was ready to rest, so we left her behind with Autumn, and DL, Starbuck, and I headed to Murphy Dome. What a beautiful day it was!
