Notes from here and there

1) Fort Wainwright soldiers are blessed at an Athabascan potlatch before deployment to Afghanistan. I think that's really nice. Warm fuzzy points for them!

2) Here are the girls looking lazy, although they never, ever, are lazy:

3) Best. Carrots. Evar. And most adorable logo. How am I still getting them at Freddies in deep winter? I have no idea. Greenhouses? Phenomenal storage methodologies?

4) One of my favorite soups, before cooking:

It has onions, ground red meat (moose, caribou, bison, beef, etc), beer, carrots, potatoes, and kale. It sounds strange, but it's really delicious!

The soup must be d-e-l-i-c-i-o-u-s. I would try it with tomato or tomato sauce in it too.

See, that's the odd thing. I love tomatoes and generally put tomatoes in everything, but I was out of tomatoes the first time I made this, and it was delicious, so now I won't add tomatoes because I'm afraid to ruin the magic!

Doesn't sound strange to me! It sounds delish!

It is, it is! I've discovered the trick to great soups--never use water! Use stock, store-bought broth, or beer, but never water!

yummy! So you start with ground moose instead of chunks of meat? And when does Rosie Creek start up their CSA again?

And about the carrots - I believe trimming off the tops, burying them in sand, and keeping them at cool temps keeps them fresh. I think it was on an Alton Brown episode once. But I can't remember.

Yup, that's pretty much it. Brown onions and mooseburger in olive oil, then dump everything else in and simmer.

The carrot thing is truly amazing!
