Starbuck spends a lot of time moping and sighing, lying on the couch with her chin between her paws. DL says that retirement was too sudden for her and she gets existential crises because she listens to me writing lectures about climate change and peak oil and so on and so forth. He says that we need to get her a hobby, perhaps some balsa wood airplanes or a stamp collecting kit.

I cannot believe you have anthropomorphized your dog to the point that you are assigning her a stamp collecting hobby. Pwaahaahahaa!
I think those sighs are just "I wish I had another rawhide" sighs...
But I may be wrong. I think you ought to take lots of portraits of just Starbuck's face and caption them. http://www.telegraph.co.uk/lifestyle/pets/9934977/Scientists-prove-you-really-can-tell-what-your-dog-is-feeling-by-looking-at-its-face.html
@Rena, thanks for sharing that link! Those photos are cute as heck. German Shepherds are soooo expressive.
Starbuck probably would be happier at where she was -- staying outdoors for the weather she was born for; or running around with the other sleigh crew...
@Mdr, nope. Starbuck loves living with us and was very sad when I left her back with her former owner when I was in Colorado for a month last summer. She cried and whined a lot and lost weight. When I went to pick her up, she was so happy I could not even grab her collar for ten minutes, she was bouncing around wagging her tail so much!
This post was meant to be funny because black dogs tend to look sad and mopey, even when they are not in actuality.
Mdr, you really should be aware that this was a joke... dogs don't play with airplanes or collect stamps! :)
