A chilly half day in Chatanika

On Sunday, MP and I drove up to Chatanika. The roads were open and clean, even going over Cleary Summit. Here are some photos of the Fairbanks Exploration Company Dredge #3. Built in 1927-1928, and operational from 1928 to 1958, she was one of the two largest dredges operated in the Fairbanks Mining District. Apparently, these things really got around; all over the local area, you can see scars in the hills and piles of gravel and tailings ponds left in their wakes.

A tailings pond. It makes me feel melancholy.

The inimitable Chatanika Lodge:

Oh oh! And I finally found half-priced chocolate bunnies! At Safeway! They reminded me vaguely of my Autumn and Linden salt and pepper shakers:

Happy Half-Priced Chocolate Bunny week, everyone!

Wow, that's an impressive piece of machinery. Surprised that it is in such good condition and hasn't been scavenged for spare parts or scrap metal yet.
