In the Alaskan Interior, the appropriate answer is cod. I don't do chowdah, though. This is my cod soup:
It's got all-Alaska-grown onions, potatoes, carrots, tomatoes, and celery. Those are my own potatoes! The base is PBR. I'm telling you, using beer as a soup base means you absolutely cannot go wrong!

Cod soup tastes good? I always remember when I was in Anchorage for business trips, I had "fish sandwich" for lunch, instead of deep-fried whatever fish we have in CA, I had fresh, grilled, big and thick halibut steak sandwich, yummy :-)
